As things go these days, I was scrolling through the Suitcases and Lattes’ Instagram feed and happened across a gorgeous pic of breakfast. With my weakness for eggs benedict, I had to find out where this gorgeous pic was taken. And that was how I found out about The Backyard Cafe.
It was storming the first time I attempted to visit on a Saturday afternoon. We walked through the quirky store and found the place was packed. There was a private function (a baby shower by the look of the decor!) and we were offered some covered seating on the patio. It would have been fine but it was just too cold.
They are closed on a Sunday and my Saturdays tend to be very busy. The next opportunity I had to go there was a sunny public holiday. Well, to be honest, we first tried to go to some other popular place famous for their high tea and found their gates locked…I was sure the Backyard Cafe would be closed but we tried it anyway.
To my surprise, they were open and buzzing. We got to sit in the sunny garden and soak up some rays. The Backyard Cafe reminded me a bit of The Larder and Starlings.
I opted for a chai latte and eggs florentine. It was amazing and deceptively filling! My only small complaint was that the ciabatta was a bit difficult to cut through.
The next time you’re in the Southern Suburbs, why not give it a try?
