What to eat for dinner? The usual questions pop up almost every day and I must admit that I’m so tired of that question that I usually end up having toast and cheese for dinner. While browsing Capetown magazine (I really love this website), I came across a write-up about a restaurant called “True Italic.” The article was very well-written and it persuaded me to try out this Italian restaurant.
I love Italian food because it’s all about the cheese and the carbs. Two of my favorite things. I booked a table for Friday night arrived there at about 8pm. The restaurant is located in Bree Street in Cape Town. The décor is very industrial with brick walls, rustic metal chandeliers, Italian soccer jerseys hanging from the walls and very high ceilings with exposed beams. The lighting is dim and very romantic. As you walk pass the counters you see fresh gnocchi in the display windows. We were seated close to the kitchen which i really enjoyed as I could witness Chef Luca in action. The table’s centerpiece was a recycled wine bottle with a lit candle. Loved the look!
After a few minutes of waiting we received the menus. It was a 2 page menu with very few options. The menu changes daily based on what is freshly available. I’m not really familiar with Italian dishes apart from pizza and pasta. Our waitress (Natasha) who is actually co-owner of True Italic helped me understand the dishes so that I ordered a great dish for my first time! The concept of “Osteria” as the name suggests means a place where the owner “hosts” guests. This was definitely the case and I experienced authentic Italian food, cooked by an Italian and served by an Italian. I was in limbo between 2 dishes and she advised me that she could combine them. I could have the Gnocci with a more traditional sauce. We ordered the Homemade Ricotto Gnocchi with a Tagliolini Norma sauce ( the custom combination) and a a Parmgiana ( layers of deep fried aubergine, Napoletana sauce, parmesan cheese and a Mozzarella Crust).
After ordering I managed to have a quick chat with one of the owners and I found the story of True Italic quite fascinating. The restaurant came to life as a result of both Luca and Natasha falling in love with Cape Town. They are from Bologna (North Italy) and decided to bring authentic Italian cuisine to our Cape Town Shores. Im so glad they did.
The meals arrived and it looked absolutely amazing. It tasted as good at looked. The portion sizes are just enough for such rich dishes and everything tasted fresh. The dishes are simple, yet tasty. I was blown away. Finishing our meals (which I rarely do) I still had some space to share a dessert. I ordered Chilli chocolate Gelato. I would definitely recommended giving this chocolate a go. The Gelato tastes of dark creamy chocolate and then there’s that kick of chilli at the end.
The investment = just under R300 for 2 people. The mains range from R90 – R150. Desserts range between R25-R100.
Would I go back? Definitely!!!. This place is a real gem. Buon Appetito!
