The ParkRoyal was the first hotel we stayed at on our trip. We chose this hotel as it is very conveniently situated in the heart of Bukit Bintang. Its a 5 star hotel with a price tag starting at just over a R1000 per night. 5 Star accommodation in KL is more expensive than Bangkok. It should be noted than the Malaysian Ringgit is currently 3 times the South African Rand (ouch!).
We arrived at the hotel and had a very swift check in. There were no cold towels and welcome drinks which we became accustomed to in SEA. At that point, we couldn’t really care less as all we wanted to do was get showered and rested.
We stayed in a Standard room on the 12th floor and yep, it was pretty standard. Lets just say it was underwhelming for a 5 star hotel. But the bed was comfy and there was at least a few English TV channels, so I was satisfied. The room was small but it had a pretty decent view of the pool and the city. It had all the essentials, a bar fridge (with 2 complimentary bottles of water), a western toilet (I should hope so), all the basic toiletries and ofcourse, another tiny hotel hairdryer.
One thing I really liked about the room was the block-out curtains. This might seem like a small thing but it is bliss when you have changed time zones (6 hrs) and need your afternoon nap. Oh, and I shouldn’t forget that the toilet can actually flush toilet paper which is a pro in SEA.
Drawbacks of the room was mainly its size and the bathroom tiles which had ugly silicone sealer and stains on. Other than that it was a decent base to explore KL from.
It all changed for me at the breakfast buffet the next morning. It was AMAZING! I have never been to such an extensive buffet. They literally had food to taste all palates. This ranged from fresh fruit to fantastic roti and curry. Yes folks, I had roti and curry for brekkie. That would explain the extra kilos I’ve been carrying around since I got back. They had specialty coffees on request. They had honey from a honeycomb and a guy preparing fresh fruit juices throughout the breakfast.
The staff were also very accommodating. On the last day we only needed to leave to the airport in the evening. They unfortunately could not accommodate our request for a late check-out so they stored our luggage for us and allowed us to stay in the pool, gym area as long as we needed.
So, if you need a base in KL which has a great location and serves a fantastic breakfast then this is the place to go. If you intend on spending all day enjoying the hotel then this is probably not going to cut it.

Thanks! I read your post. Really cute B&B. I’ve never been one for budget accommodation when I’m overseas because I always fear it may spoil my vacation but when I’m in South Africa (home), I am more flexible and more willing to be adventurous. Adventure makes for good reads though. Keep it up. XXX
